THE ARABIC LANGUAGE: THE KEY TO UNDERSTANDING THE ESSENCE OF THE QUR'AN

Arabic holds a central position in Islam as it is the language of the Qur’an, revealed as divine revelation. However, the reality of contemporary Muslim communities shows that understanding the Qur’an still largely relies on translations, which have limitations in representing the richness of meaning, linguistic structure, and rhetorical nuances of the original text. This condition has the potential to produce partial and less contextual understandings of the divine message. This study aims to examine the role of the Arabic language as a fundamental element in authentically understanding the contents of the Qur’an from linguistic, historical, and spiritual perspectives. The method employed is a library-based study using a qualitative-descriptive approach through the analysis of classical and contemporary literature relevant to Qur’anic exegesis and Arabic language studies. The findings indicate that Arabic does not merely function as a medium for conveying the text but also shapes the epistemological framework for understanding revelation. The unique features of Arabic, such as its rich vocabulary, grammatical precision, and rhetorical beauty (balāghah), enable the Qur’an to convey both explicit and implicit meanings with precision. Mastery of nahw, ṣarf, and balāghah is therefore an essential requirement for comprehensive Qur’anic interpretation. It is concluded that proficiency in Arabic is an essential necessity in Islamic studies. Early instruction in Arabic is viewed as a strategic solution for developing Muslim generations capable of engaging with the Qur’an in a holistic and contextually relevant manner.
